Studies have found that even short-term exposure to small particulate matter increases the risk of a variety of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. The tiny particles, measuring less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, or roughly 4% the width of a strand of hair, are small enough to be breathed deep into the lungs and can enter the bloodstream. Indoor air filters can help reduce or remove pollutants, including small particulate matter from wildfire smoke.
